Traumatic stress and COVID

We’re used to thinking of trauma as resulting from a one-off life-threatening experience, but let’s not kid ourselves.

So here we are, still in lockdown and no end in sight to the pandemic. Who would have thought our world could change so much?

We’re used to thinking of trauma as resulting from a one-off life-threatening experience, but let’s not kid ourselves: this pandemic, and the lockdown, are equally traumatic. The difference is that they drag on. They’ve sort of altered and shaped our lives; become the new normal.

And, all too often, the trauma and stress of this new normal goes unnoticed, just another aspect of our changed world.

We say “Be safe.” We say “Be kind.” But should we maybe add “Be kind to yourself”?
